Canary Wharf’s New District on track to take residents in 2019

Although Canary Wharf’s New District – the construction site to the east of the original estate – is not due for completion until 2022, Canary Wharf Group has revealed that some parts could be occupied as early as 2019.

CWG said the 23-acre extension, which will feature homes, parks, shops and a school, was progressing well and passers-by can see work beginning on the showpiece skyscraper – the first UK residential venture for Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron – One Park Drive which will feature 483 luxury apartments. It aims to upend the traditional notion of the upper floor penthouse to put high-end homes at lower levels to create a sense of a cohesive community.

Other residential buildings include 10 Park Drive by renowned architects Stanton Williams, bringing 343 apartments, and is expected to be the first of the new residential developments to be complete.

The scheme aims to create a community in an area that has been traditionally associated with corporations, especially banks. Low-rise houses, medical facilities and shops will be tailored to a live-in community.

Canary Wharf Group Contractors operations executive Mark Taylor said “Not only is this one of the biggest construction sites in the capital, the hugely ambitious project has an equally ambitious timeline. The site’s proximity to the docks and position over the Jubilee Line involves some seriously complex engineering solutions.

 “Nevertheless, the 800-strong workforce are making amazing progress. There’s still a lot of work to be done, but we’re pleased to announce that we’re on track to be completed as planned.”

Director of residential Brian De’ath said: The New District is a major investment for the group and one of the most ambitious projects in the capital to date. We’re not just creating new homes, we’re building a brand-new neighbourhood. A key part of the planning process was to create a sense of community and a space which complements the existing restaurants, shops and bars.”
